Residents experiencing domestic abuse are being reminded they are not alone and urged to seek help.
As the FIFA World Cup continues, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is reminding residents that support is available for anyone affected by abuse at home.
Research shows domestic abuse can increase during men's football matches, with incidents rising by 38% when England men's football team lose and by 26% when they draw or win. While football does not cause domestic abuse, it can exacerbate existing abusive behaviour.
The call follows the council's reaccreditation by the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance, the UK's leading specialist domestic abuse partnership, after it first achieved accreditation last year.
The alliance sets a benchmark for how housing providers and their partners should respond to victims of domestic abuse, which is coercive behaviour including physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, financial or sexual abuse.
The reaccreditation recognises how the council continues to provide safe, effective support through training its staff and partnering with organisations to help affected residents to access advice, housing support and pathways to safety.
It also builds on the council's work as a White Ribbon-accredited organisation, committing to work to prevent violence against women and girls, challenge abusive behaviour and create safer communities.
Cabinet Member for Residents' Services and Housing Cllr Laura James said: "Behind every domestic abuse statistic is a real person whose life is being affected. Nobody should have to live in fear and it is vital that they know help is available.
"No one should suffer in silence. Whether someone is experiencing abuse themselves or is worried about a friend, family member or neighbour, support is available and they do not have to face it alone.
"Residents can contact us for help including housing and specialist support services. Local and national organisations are also available to provide confidential advice.
"Our recent reaccreditation by the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance and our White Ribbon accreditation reflect our commitment to provide support, challenge abusive behaviour and work with partners to create safer communities for everyone."
