"This new mural is another example of the City's ongoing commitment to public art," said Ward 5 Councilmember Devon Reese. "I encourage residents to visit Northwest Park and experience the mural, and I look forward to seeing more public art projects in our area in the future."
"The Arts & Culture Advisory Board's mission is to bring more public art to parks and community spaces throughout our City," said Arts & Culture Advisory Board Liaison and Ward 6 Councilmember Brandi Anderson. "Public art adds character and vibrancy to our shared spaces, and I encourage all residents to enjoy these newest additions."
The new mural was created and painted by artist Terrence Hammond through the Nevada Museum of Art's CoLab Mural Works program. Students from enCompass Academy and Innovations High School collaborated with Hammond on the mural's design, gaining hands-on experience in mural planning, artistic design, and large-scale installation.
The final design was later brought to the Arts & Culture Advisory Board (ACAB) for approval. ACAB approved the piece and allocated $7,500 in funding to support the project through the Arts & Culture Room Tax Fund.
The mural was painted in early June with Hammond and students from enCompass Academy and Innovations High School, giving them the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist. The mural features a theme inspired by baseball, recreation, and the natural surroundings of Northwest Park.
