State Auditor's Office Earns National Award and Recognition for DMV Audit

Raleigh, NC
Apr 28, 2026

The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) is pleased to share that it has been recognized by the National State Auditors Association (NSAA) with an Excellence in Accountability Award for its performance audit of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The NSAA's performance audit awards are presented to the best "large" and "small" performance audit reports. OSA's comprehensive DMV performance audit was released in August 2025 and marks the first time the State Auditor's Office has received NSAA's top honors in the Performance Audit (Large) category.

"Earning the Excellence in Accountability Award proves just how impactful the Office of State Auditor can be," said State Auditor Dave Boliek. "Auditing the DMV was a Day One commitment of mine to the people of North Carolina. Our team produced a data-driven audit that created a shared priority of government to drive real change at the DMV. I'm proud of the State Auditor's Performance Division for their work, and I'm grateful for NSAA's recognition of our audit."

  • Criteria evaluated by the NCAA's Excellence in Accountability Awards Committee include:
  • Scope and potential for significant impact
  • Persuasiveness of conclusions
  • Focus of the recommendations on effective and efficient government
  • Clarity and conciseness of communication style
  • Innovation
  • Usefulness to customer
  • Action produced

"Through the Excellence in Accountability Awards Program, NSAA is pleased to recognize some of the most innovative thinking in the current state government auditing environment," NSAA said. "Twenty-nine entries were submitted this year in four categories - large performance audit, small performance audit, special project, and forensic report. Every applicant is to be commended for the levels of professional integrity, quality and innovation that are apparent throughout NSAA's member offices."

The NSAA is part of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers (NASACT), which serves as the premier organization working to bring together state auditors, state comptrollers and state treasurers to cooperatively address government financial management issues.
