Senator Marshall: We Need the SAVE America Act to Save Our Republic

Senator Marshall Joins Newsmax Rob Schmitt Tonight

Washington - U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas), joined Rob Schmitt Tonight on Newsmax to discuss why the SAVE America Act is so important for American democracy, how the Senate filibuster is blocking progress on it, and the tough road to getting it passed through the Senate.

On passing the SAVE America Act:

"Yeah, Rob. Well, you're spot on. Look, if we want to save this republic, then we need to pass the SAVE America Act. My whip count is that we have 50 votes, depending on what you put on the bill - but I think you've got 50 votes for voter ID, and you've got 50 votes for proof of citizenship. I'm not sure if we got 50 votes on the unsolicited ballots going out - it kind of depends what type of guardrails that you're talking about there. But their argument is that this is federal control of elections. I certainly respect that the Constitution says the local government will determine the time, manner, and place, but I do think that what we're describing is very reasonable - it's a 90/10 issue."

On what parts of the bill are causing disagreement:

"Well, it may be. And again, I hate to speak for other senators, because really, I haven't heard anybody stand up and give an argument. But I haven't heard anybody stand up at lunchtime - look, we have lunch together every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - I haven't heard anybody really stand up and say why or why not. Except to hear the one vote we're worried about; I've heard her support voter ID and proof of citizenship."

On passing the SAVE America Act by removing the Senate filibuster:

"Yeah, it's feasible, but it'll be next to impossible, this won't be easy. Let me back up here - we would have 50 votes that would vote for SAVE America, but not 50 votes to break the filibuster to do it. And that's really in the weeds, but so many of them, this is their big argument. Probably only a third of our caucus is there yet of ending the filibuster - but I'm ready to. I wasn't there a year ago, but think about this: the Democrats, as soon as they get control, they're ending the filibuster. Every Democrat senator that's here today, that was here in 2022, voted to end the filibuster. And the five new Democrats that are here - three of the five have guaranteed they'll vote in the filibuster, one is undecided, and one is flip flopping. So, let's do a preemptive strike."

On Congressman Byron Donalds' comments on the Senate:

"Well, thank you so much, Byron. Look, you know, I think it's been well said that the House is the coffee cup, and we're the saucer. We're supposed to measure twice and cut once. And even if Byron was the Senate majority leader right now, he couldn't get this across the finish line. Look, like I said, it takes 60 votes to do most anything over here, and we just don't have enough people that are willing to end the filibuster. And I respect where they're coming from. But this is the one issue, if I could only pass one law my entire rest of my career, this would be it. But again, he's one vote out of how many over there? 435? All they have to do is get a simple majority - it's day and night comparing the rules of the Senate to the rules of the House."

On John Thune's leadership to pass the SAVE America Act:

"No, I think John Thune is doing an incredible job - he's leading as best he can, he's listening to his caucus. He does not have the votes right now, so why would we take up a week or two of time, and we could be doing nomination approval? That's one more thing the Senate has to do."

"Yeah, well, trust me, he's tried to. But I think that your listeners need to call their senators and get them on board. And Rob, this weekend, one more thing: America is back. And we need to get this across the finish line. I'm right there with you, doing everything I can to get the SAVE America Act across the finish line, but it is a steep, uphill battle."
