The City of Spokane has partnered with Meals on Wheels to buy cooling fans for local seniors and residents with disabilities, helping them to stay safe during upcoming warmer months.
Meals on Wheels will distribute the fans, ensuring they reach individuals who may be especially vulnerable to heat and/or have limited access to cooling resources.
"As we get ready for the warmer months ahead, it's critical that we support our most vulnerable community members. By sending funds to Meals on Wheels, we're helping ensure seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents have the fans they need to stay cool and breathe easier during extreme heat and smoke events. Doing so lets us be proactive and intentional in prioritizing their health and well-being this summer," Council President Betsy Wilkerson said.
"Something as simple as a fan can make a meaningful difference. This is a small, but important way we can support our seniors and help them stay safe in their homes," Mayor Lisa Brown said.
"The City of Spokane's support comes at a critical time as we prepare for warmer temperatures and the challenges they can bring for the seniors we serve," said Gail Golden, Development Director for Meals on Wheels Spokane. "Access to something as simple as a fan can significantly improve comfort and help older adults remain safe in their homes during the heat. This investment allows Meals on Wheels Spokane to continue delivering not only nutritious meals, but also the care, connection, and dignity our seniors deserve."
This $1,000 purchase is supported by the City of Spokane's inclement weather fund.
