ICYMI: Boyle Highlights $1.5 Million in Federal Funding for Temple’s PHASeS Program

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) joined Temple University leaders at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine to highlight $1.5 million in federal Community Project Funding he secured for Temple University's Philadelphia Healthy and Safe Schools (PHASeS) program, which helps build trauma-sensitive programs within Philadelphia schools.

"I am here for a very happy reason and that is to announce I've secured $1.5 million for Temple University and its Philadelphia Healthy and Safe Schools program,"said Congressman Boyle. "I applaud everyone involved at Temple University for creating this program and sustaining it, and I hope that these resources will prove to be of great assistance."

The funding was signed into law as part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Act through the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs.

The event also featured remarks from Nicolle K. Strand, JD, MBE, MPH, Director and Associate Professor in the Center for Health Justice and Bioethics at Temple University's Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and Mary Beth Hays, LSW, Director of the Philadelphia Healthy and Safe Schools program and Assistant Professor in the Center for Health Justice and Bioethics.

Temple's PHASeS program helps build trauma-sensitive programs in Philadelphia schools, working to address challenges early and strengthen student well-being across Philadelphia.

"I've seen firsthand how valuable the PHASeS program is. The team provides social and emotional support to kids, parents, teachers, staff, and principals," said Nicolle Strand. "Thanks to Congressman Boyle's advocacy, even more members of our community will benefit from the PHASeS program. This money allows us to expand into more schools and to spread the good work even further."

"At its core, the PHASeS program embodies an intensive relationship-based approach to education," said Mary Beth Hays. "Thank you to our legislators for your backing. PHASeS not only uplifts student learning but also nurtures educator satisfaction leading to reduce burnout and more resilient teaching workforce."

This funding, which Boyle secured, reflects his broader commitment to ensuring federal dollars reach programs that meet real needs in the community and deliver meaningful support for children and families in Philadelphia.
