Media Alert: Mineral and Petroleum Resources Committee To Hear Macua’s Petition

Parliament, Monday, 24 August 2026 - The Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources will tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 August 2026, hear a petition from the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) titled: "Coalition on Mining Accountability, Capital Flight and Community Abandonment".

The petition was submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly in November 2025 as a joint initiative by MACUA, Tlou Mogale Foundation, Bench Marks Foundation, Institute for Economic Justice, Centre for Applied Legal Studies, Lawyers for Human Rights, Legal Resource Centre and Just Share.

The organisations are calling on Parliament to urgently investigate and address the socio-economic, environmental and governance failures they say are associated with Anglo American's disinvestment from South Africa, as well as what they describe as a broader pattern of extractive corporate conduct that undermines economic sovereignty, accountability and the wellbeing of mining-affected communities.

The petition seeks parliamentary scrutiny of the implications of corporate disinvestment, capital flight, the rehabilitation and closure of mining operations and the obligations of mining companies to workers, communities and the broader South African economy.

MACUA and its partners will present their concerns directly to the committee and outline the measures they believe are necessary to strengthen corporate accountability and protect the rights and interests of mining-affected communities.

Details of the meeting
