[IHB-ISL] Riley Hospital for Children Receives Indiana Historical Marker Commemorating a Century of Care

A new Indiana state historical marker was presented this week at Riley Hospital for Children commemorating the hospital's century of care. As Indiana's largest and most comprehensive healthcare network for children, Riley Hospital for Children has been a pillar in the Indianapolis community, providing care for over 100 years. Named after the famous Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, the hospital was dedicated on October 7, 1924. Each year, Riley Hospital for Children cares for hundreds of thousands of children and is consistently ranked as one of the top children's hospitals in the U.S.

"The unveiling of the historical marker by the Indiana Historical Bureau is a proud moment for all of us at Riley Children's Health. It reflects not only our deep-rooted history but also the enduring commitment of our team to provide advanced, compassionate care to not only Hoosier children but for children from all over the world," said Riley Children's Health president David Biggerstaff. "For over a century, Riley Hospital for Children has been at the forefront of pediatric care, ensuring that every child, regardless of where they come from, receives the highest level of care. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of our team and the unwavering support of our community."

The text, which appears below the marker headline, is engraved on both sides and reads as follows:

Prominent friends of children's poet James Whitcomb Riley agreed to open a hospital to honor him after his death in 1916. The Riley Memorial Association, formed in 1921, worked with Indiana University, the State of Indiana, and private donors to construct the hospital. Riley Hospital for Children opened in 1924 and treated nearly 40,000 children in its first decade. The hospital quickly became a national leader in pediatric diagnoses, treatment, and surgery, with advancements in heart surgery, cochlear implants, and neonatal care. Partnering with the IU School of Medicine, Riley physicians have conducted innovative research in specialized areas such as cancer and diabetes, driving breakthroughs in children's health care.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For over 100 years, the Indiana Historical Bureau, a division of the Indiana State Library, has been marking Indiana history. Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. Over 750 of these markers have been installed over the years. This marker is one of more than 100 markers in Marion County. For a listing of all markers in Marion County and statewide, click here.
