Tim Nelson, MD/PhD - Co-Founder and CEO, HeartWorks giving a tour to WEDC Secretary/Chief Executive Officer John W. Miller.
HeartWorks is redefining how early-stage biomedical companies bring cardiovascular innovations to life. The nonprofit organization is leading plans to create a preclinical biomedical innovation hub focused on cardiovascular solutions, giving startups access to clinically relevant testing environments that are often cost-prohibitive or difficult to secure. By addressing this gap, HeartWorks aims to accelerate product validation, reduce development timelines, and unlock new pathways for medical breakthroughs that can ultimately improve patient outcomes.
Founded by biomedical innovator Tim Nelson, HeartWorks combines mission-driven research with deep clinical expertise. The organization bioengineers heart muscle by converting patient skin cells into stem cells and then into beating cardiac tissue-technology that allows researchers and entrepreneurs to study disease and test therapies in highly realistic conditions. While HeartWorks' research operations are currently based in Rochester, Minnesota, the organization is actively planning a transition to Wisconsin as part of its long-term growth strategy and commitment to building a scalable innovation platform.
HeartWorks' vision extends beyond its own research. The proposed innovation hub would serve as shared infrastructure for startups, researchers, and clinicians working in cardiovascular and related biomedical fields. By creating dedicated space for preclinical testing and collaboration, HeartWorks is positioning itself as a catalyst for startup formation, technology spinouts, and cross-disciplinary partnerships. This model not only strengthens individual companies but also helps build a more connected and competitive life sciences ecosystem in the Midwest.
Wisconsin offers the right conditions to support HeartWorks' ambitious growth. The state's strong academic research base, access to healthcare institutions, and proximity to major MedTech and biomedical markets create an environment where innovation can move quickly from concept to commercialization. Strategic relationships with organizations such as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Mayo Clinic Health System further enhance opportunities for collaboration, talent development, and applied research.
WEDC is working alongside HeartWorks to support this initiative through its entrepreneurship and innovation programs. Engagement has included exploring funding pathways, facilitating strategic connections, and identifying resources that can help bring the preclinical innovation hub to life. As HeartWorks continues to advance its vision, the organization represents the kind of mission-driven, high-impact innovation that strengthens Wisconsin's biohealth sector and drives long-term economic growth.
