USAG Stuttgart’s new DFMWR Director has served the community for decades

Leadership at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart recently announced long-time team member Corrie Schwab as the new director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, continuing her decades of dedication to the community.

Schwab most recently served as FMWR's community recreation division chief before taking on the director role as an acting head of the organization over the summer. The announcement was unique for an overseas installation as Schwab will be the only director who has spent her entire career at USAG Stuttgart.

"Corrie brings exceptional experience, leadership, and a strong commitment to serving our Service Members, civilians, and families," said USAG Stuttgart Garrison Commander Col. Edward J. Sanford, when announcing the decision. "FMWR plays a vital role in strengthening readiness and enhancing quality of life across our community, and I am confident she will lead the directorate with professionalism, energy, and a genuine passion for our people and community."

Originally from Sterling Mich., Schwab's first role at FMWR was with Child and Youth Services as a program assistant at the Patch Hub in 2005 before becoming the assistant director of Patch Child Development Center. From there she served as the Panzer School Aged Center director and then the Patch SAC director before finishing her time at CYS as the Parent and Outreach Services director. Over those years, Stuttgart turned into her hometown.

"I've lived here for over 20 years, hence why I know consider it home," Schwab said. "I came here straight out of collage because I fell in love with a German man, three years later he proposed and over 20 years later we're happily married with two sweet boys."

Schwab initially chose FMWR for the practical opportunities it offered, including logistical support and SOFA status. However, over the past 20 years, her perspective has transformed after witnessing the organization's impact.

"Whether someone is into powerlifting, theater, woodworking, or travel, FMWR connects people through shared passions," Schwab said. "What makes FMWR truly special is its ability to bridge diverse backgrounds-bringing together Service Members, their families, and our civilian workforce into one unified community that strengthens readiness and quality of life."

An alumnus of Central Michigan University, a dedicated VFB and Michigan fan, as well as a youth basketball coach who runs marathons and spends her weekends watching kids' soccer, Schwab is also a dedicated parent and spouse who is excited to make life better for the USAG Stuttgart community.

As director, Schwab plans to focus her efforts on two priorities, empowering her team and elevating programming. First, she plans to focus on her workforce, enhancing staff development and fostering leadership at every level. Second, she plans to modernize programs where possible in response to community feedback and garrison leadership's priorities.

"What I wish everyone knew is that FMWR is continually focused on improving the programs and facilities supporting our community," Schwab said. "We have demonstrated this through investments like audio upgrades at the Swabian Special Events Center, and enhancements at the Galaxy Bowling and Entertainment Center. Looking ahead, we are excited for upcoming equipment modernizations at the Kelley Car Wash and a brand-new Speedy Lube and Auto Skills Center opening on Panzer Kaserne next summer."

Having worked at nearly every level of FMWR, and after overseeing several recent improvements and modernizations, Schwab is uniquely qualified to implement these priorities. For those who are new to her team, she offers the same advice that has guided her.

"Be open to where the journey takes you," she said. "You might start for the travel, overseas opportunities, or practical perks, but the real reward is the community you help build for Service Members and their families. Dive into the work, learn the ins and outs, and focus on supporting the people around you. If you take pride in serving others, listen to feedback, and commit to personal growth, you will find that FMWR is far more than a job-it's a dynamic, deeply rewarding career."
