BSNC Congratulates Descendants on Receiving 2026 AFN President’s Awards

BSNC congratulates descendants Wallace Ungwiluk and Darrin Topkok on receiving the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) President's Awards. BSNC was honored to have nominated both descendants for this prestigious recognition.

Wallace Ungwiluk was honored with the Roger Lang Youth Leadership Award. Born in Nome and raised in Gambell, Ungwiluk developed a strong foundation in Alaska Native culture, subsistence living, and community values. After graduating from Apangalook High School in 2017, he pursued higher education in the Lower 48, earning bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and Psychology, followed by a master's degree in Management and Leadership from Multnomah University, while competing as a collegiate basketball player. He later served as an assistant coach for Lewis-Clark State College and continues to coach basketball in Gambell, mentoring student athletes in player development, academics, and leadership.

Inspired by the curiosity of friends and teammates who wanted to learn about his hometown, Ungwiluk taught himself videography and created a YouTube channel dedicated to sharing authentic life in Gambell. His videos highlight Alaska Native culture, subsistence hunting and gathering, and the resilience of his community. Ungwiluk soon realized that his videos also served to inspire and motivate youth to learn and practice their cultural traditions. Through storytelling, he educates audiences around the world while preserving cultural traditions, instilling pride within his community.

Darrin Topkok was honored with the Glenn Godfrey Law Enforcement Award. Topkok is an Alaska State Trooper whose life and work are deeply rooted in Western Alaska. His commitment to public service began at home in 2020, serving as a Village Public Safety Officer (VSPO) in the communities that supported and shaped him. He later served as a "Roving" VPSO throughout the region, an experience that deepened his dedication to public safety and inspired him to pursue a career with the Alaska State Troopers.

In May of 2026, Topkok completed the Alaska State Trooper Academy, officially earning his badge and title as an Alaska State Trooper. For Topkok, wearing the uniform is far more than a profession; it represents a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of Alaskans. He remains goal-driven to serve his state with humility, strength, and integrity. Above all, Topkok is guided by his devotion to his two children in Nome and the strong friendships built throughout the town and surrounding region. Grounded by his heritage and driven by a continuous effort toward personal growth, Topkok remains dedicated to building a safer, stronger future for the next generation, serving Alaska with heart, duty, and purpose.

Congratulations on this incredible achievement, Wallace and Darrin. Quyaana for all that you do!
