Consumers Energy Crews Battle Challenging Conditions into the Night Following Devastating Holiday Weekend Storm

Jackson, Mich. Sunday, July 05, 2026

Consumers Energy crews and hundreds of contractor and mutual assistance lineworkers have restored power to over 210,000 customers following last week's severe storms and will continue to work through the night. The storm system left a trail of damage across multiple states and parts of Ontario heading into the holiday weekend, impacting over 1 million electric customers along its path, including approximately 250,000 Consumers Energy customers in Michigan.

With more than 460 crews in the field, Consumers Energy expects to restore power to a majority of affected customers by midnight. Crews from across Michigan are being joined by lineworkers and contractors from Ohio, Maryland and Alabama to help restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

"While we've made significant progress, we know many customers are still waiting for their power to be restored," said Norm Kapala, one of Consumers Energy's officers in charge for the storm. "We appreciate their patience as crews continue working through challenging conditions. We're making a full-court press tonight and will keep working until every last customer is restored."

Consumers Energy continues to utilize storm trailers and mobile command centers stationed in Allegan, Hillsdale and Adrian to keep crews supplied and positioned close to areas with the greatest damage.

Consumers Energy is also expressing its appreciation to customers impacted by the storm and ongoing outages. The company hosted customer appreciation events Sunday in Jonesville and Delton, providing free food and refreshments to residents while restoration work continued throughout the day. The events were intended to offer a small measure of comfort and support as crews work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

"As the holiday weekend comes to a close, we know many families and communities are ready to have their power back and return to normal," Kapala said. "We understand these outages have interrupted celebrations, family time and daily routines. That's why our crews have been working through difficult conditions all day, and they'll continue working through the night and into Monday. We're incredibly grateful for our customers' patience as we work safely and relentlessly until every last customer is restored."

Keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Stay at least 25 feet away from downed power lines, and report unguarded downed lines by calling 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Consumers Energy reminds people that falsely calling in downed lines slows down the restoration process for everyone.
  • Be alert to crews working along roadsides. Drivers should slow down or stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear so they can go safely past.
  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. Read more guidance on safe generator use here.
  • Consumers Energy will trim or remove trees interfering with electric restoration activities. Once safe to do so, cleanup ofdebris from tree trimming or removal during a storm emergency is the responsibility of individual property owners.
  • In some cases, the mast that holds the electric service wires to a home or business may have been damaged or torn away. Crews will reconnect the wires to a home, but only a licensed electrician can repair or replace a mast or a cable.
