Dewsbury temporary market prepares to open

Transformation is underway in Dewsbury town centre as work gets set to begin on the town's historic market. A temporary market will open on Saturday 26 September, allowing traders to continue operating and residents to keep shopping whilst the work is underway.

The main market is open until the 26 September, so residents can continue shopping with their favourite traders before they relocate to the temporary market.

The works are part of the Dewsbury Blueprint, the council's plan to regenerate, revitalise and future-proof the town. The temporary market will allow traders to continue operating whilst improvements are carried out on the main market.

Where is temporary market located?

The temporary market is located across Foundry Street and Market Place making sure the market remains at the heart of the town. A pedestrian zone has been created, and the layout has been carefully planned to increase footfall to the area whilst ensuring there is minimal disruption to traffic, businesses, residents and traders.

Residents will still be able to find many of their favourite traders at the temporary market including fruit and veg stalls, food vendors and household goods. The temporary market plays an important role in making the long-term vision possible. This also provides a dedicated space for traders, making sure traders and businesses can continue operating and protects their livelihoods whilst the regeneration progresses.

What are the plans for the main market?

Plans for the main market focus on creating a future-proofed modern space, with an adaptable layout, event space and town park. The aim is to transform the market into a vibrant destination for shopping, dining and socialising that attracts new traders and visitors.

The market transformation forms part of a broader programme of investment across Dewsbury. Improvements are also underway to the civic spaces surrounding the Town Hall, the historic Dewsbury Arcade regeneration is now complete, and new modern town centre are being created through the transformation of Fieldhouse into Station Apartments. Together, these initiatives aim to create a more vibrant, welcoming, and diverse town centre with greater choice for residents and visitors.

While residents will notice changes and increased activity in the coming months, these developments are part of a carefully planned approach to long-term improvement.

Dewsbury is evolving into a stronger, more resilient town, one that supports local businesses, creates new opportunities, and offers more reasons for people to visit and spend time in the town centre.
