Tajani at the Hormuz meeting: “UN’s decisive role, ready to support initiatives for a humanitarian corridor and navigation security”

Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani participated today via videoconference in the meeting on the situation in Iran and the consequences of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The videoconference was coordinated by the United Kingdom following the declaration of 19 March, signed by 35 countries, including Italy.

In his intervention, Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy's position in favour of an immediate de-escalation and a return to diplomatic dialogue, emphasising full coordination with European and international partners, and supporting any negotiated solution capable of ensuring stability in the region.

He emphasised that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz directly affects maritime route security, global energy supplies and food security. Referring to the G7 declaration of 27 March, Tajani confirmed Italy's commitment to contributing to international efforts to safeguard freedom of navigation, in accordance with international law, and to preserve the stability of energy markets.

The Minister also stated that Italy is ready to participate in multilateral initiatives to ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Strait, stressing that a clear United Nations mandate is essential.

Together with colleagues including the Dutch Minister and the Deputy Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Tajani underscored the need for a UN-led process to establish a "humanitarian corridor" at the earliest opportunity, primarily for fertilisers and other critical supplies to prevent a new food crisis, particularly in African countries. Ensuring the transport of fertilisers and other humanitarian goods through the Strait of Hormuz is vital.
