The Party of European Socialists (PES) fully supports the decision of the Parliament's International Trade Committee to suspend work on the Turnberry legislative proposals. We support putting the EU-US trade deal on hold and stand in firm solidarity with Denmark and Greenland against unacceptable external pressures.
The European Union's trade policy must be built on mutual respect, stability, and the rule of law. The recent escalations and threats to the territorial integrity of an EU member state are incompatible with the spirit of a fair-trade partnership. President Trump's intention to impose ever-increasing tariffs on eight European countries for not giving up on Greenland is a tool of political coercion that undermines the very foundations of international cooperation.
The PES strongly supports the leadership shown by the S&D Group and Bernd Lange, chair of Parliament's International Trade Committee. Their decisive action ensures that the European Parliament remains a steadfast defender of European sovereignty by protecting the integrity of all member states and their territories, while upholding the necessity of predictable trade by refusing to negotiate under the threat of arbitrary tariffs. This approach reflects our core values of prioritising political stability and cooperation over fragmented, confrontational trade deals.
