HONOLULU - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying motorists of upcoming closures on the H-1 Freeway between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp the week of Monday, July 13. The closure is necessary for work above the roadway, on the temporary pedestrian bridge near the Gulick Avenue overpass.
Crews will work nightly between the Ola Lane overpass and the Likelike Highway off-ramp (Exit 20A) from the makai to mauka abutment of the temporary pedestrian bridge to complete installations of decking, fencing, lighting and other safety measures prior to opening for public use.
Work will be Monday through Wednesday evenings, from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the next day, however the number of lanes closed, and direction of work will vary by day. Please see the table below for weekly lane closure schedule. This work excludes weekends and holidays.
| Monday, July 13 9 p.m. - 4:30 a.m. | Two right eastbound lanes closed on the H-1 Freeway |
| Tuesday, July 14, 9 p.m. - 4:30 a.m. |
Two left westbound lanes, and two left eastbound lanes closed on the H-1 Freeway |
| Wednesday, July 15, 9 p.m. - 4:30 a.m. | Two right westbound lanes closed on the H-1 Freeway |
This work is anticipated to go through the week of Monday, July 20. The Temporary Pedestrian Bridge is scheduled to open for public use in August 2026, prior to the start of demolition and reconstruction work on the Gulick Avenue Overpass. As work progresses to the Gulick Avenue overpass, further closures on the H-1 Freeway will be minimal. This work will be performed in the daytime, mainly on City and County of Honolulu-owned roads.
The estimated completion date for the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is February 2028, weather permitting.
