Rep. McClain Delaney Pushes for Bipartisan, Comprehensive Immigration Solutions

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (D-MD) released a statement after voting against The Stop Illegal Entry Act:

"I came to Congress to deliver common-sense solutions for Maryland families, and this bill is far from that. The Stop Illegal Entry Actgoes well beyond reasonable enforcement. It would impose mandatory prison sentences of five years, up to a maximum life sentence, for individuals who enter unlawfully. Disturbingly, it contains no carve-outs for children-meaning even theycould be subjected to these harsh penalties. That is a line we must never cross.

I support thoughtful, comprehensive immigration reform, but enforcement must reflect basic humanity. Locking up families and children for years will not fix the system. Rather, it will waste taxpayer dollars, overcrowd prisons and undermine the bedrock principles that define us as Americans.

We need a better path forward. That means coming together-Republicans and Democrats-to deliver immigration reform that secures our borders, enforces the law fairly, and provides solutions that are both serious and humane. This bill fails that test, and that is why I voted against it."
