A north Lethbridge home linked to persistent drug activity has been ordered closed following a Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit investigation that began in March 2025 after community complaints. During the investigation, SCAN members observed short-term visits to the property, consistent with drug trafficking activity. In May 2025, members of the Lethbridge Police Service executed a search warrant of the property and seized drugs and drug paraphernalia. Four people were arrested.
Despite issuing a warning letter to the property owner, SCAN continued to receive and substantiate public complaints regarding drug activity. On June 30, 2026, SCAN officers obtained a Community Safety Order from the Court of King's Bench to close the property at 1226 13 Avenue North for 90 days. Beginning at noon on July 7, the property is required to be vacated and secured, until the end of the closure period on Oct. 5, 2026, with conditions remaining in place until Oct. 5, 2028. SCAN will continue to monitor the property through the closure period.
"Illegal drug activity affects more than the people involved; it disrupts entire neighbourhoods and leaves residents feeling unsafe. Through the coordinated efforts of Alberta Sheriffs' SCAN unit and the Lethbridge Police Service, decisive action was taken to address this problem property, helping restore a sense of safety and security for nearby residents."
"This investigation began because community members spoke up about ongoing concerns. Those reports, combined with SCAN's investigative work, allowed us to obtain a closure order and put an end to the illegal activity occurring at this property. We encourage Albertans to continue reporting suspicious activity so we can work with our policing partners to keep communities safe."
The Alberta Sheriffs work with other law enforcement agencies to shut down properties being used for illegal activities. The SCAN unit operates under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, which uses legal sanctions and court orders to hold owners accountable for illegal activity happening on their property.
