An ABU Perspective: Protecting the Truth in an Age of Uncertainty

Trust has become journalism's most valuable asset and perhaps its most vulnerable.

Across the world, news organisations are navigating an increasingly complex landscape shaped by misinformation, artificial intelligence, political polarisation, digital disruption, and growing threats to the safety and wellbeing of journalists. At a time when facts are challenged with unprecedented speed and public confidence in media continues to evolve, the role of trusted journalism has never been more important.

Yet resilience in journalism is about more than verifying facts or embracing new technologies. It is about protecting the people behind the headlines. Every day, journalists work under immense pressure to report accurately, ethically, and responsibly, often in difficult and unpredictable circumstances. Their wellbeing is fundamental to the sustainability of quality journalism and the public's right to reliable information.

These critical issues will take centre stage at the 2026 Global News Forum (GNF), taking place in Sydney, Australia, from 2-4 September 2026 in partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Returning to Australia for the first time in a decade, the Forum will bring together news leaders, editors, journalists, and media professionals from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore innovative approaches to strengthening the future of news.

Interest in this year's Forum continues to grow, with more than 300 registrations already received from broadcasters and media professionals across the region and beyond. Participants will also hear from an outstanding line-up of internationally recognised broadcasting and journalism experts, who will share their perspectives on newsroom leadership, audience trust, digital transformation, journalist wellbeing, and the future of public service media.

Under the theme "Resilient Journalism: Safeguarding Truth and Wellbeing," this year's Forum will examine how broadcasters can defend trusted journalism while fostering healthier, more sustainable newsrooms. Through thought-provoking keynote presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative exchanges, delegates will gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the next generation of journalism.

The future of journalism will not be defined by technology alone. It will be shaped by the choices we make to uphold truth, support those who deliver it, and work together to ensure trusted journalism continues to serve society.

If your organisation is committed to strengthening journalism for the future, we invite you to be part of the conversation. Register today and join us in Sydney for the 2026 Global News Forum.
