NWTC Hosts State Leaders to Recognize Careers in Construction Month in Wisconsin

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) welcomed local legislators and representatives from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) on Wednesday, April 22, for the official presentation of a statewide proclamation recognizing October as Careers in Construction Month in Wisconsin.

The proclamation, issued through 2025 Assembly Joint Resolution 97, highlights the essential role of construction professionals in building and sustaining communities across the state while raising awareness of the wide range of career opportunities available in the industry.

During the event at NWTC, leaders emphasized the importance of connecting students to construction pathways early - ensuring they are aware of high-demand, high-opportunity careers that offer long-term stability and growth. With the construction industry representing nearly six percent of Wisconsin's workforce and a projected need for nearly 500,000 new craft professionals in 2026, the demand for skilled workers continues to grow both statewide and across Northeast Wisconsin.

"Careers in construction provide meaningful, family-sustaining opportunities that cannot be outsourced," said John Schulze, Director of Legal and Government Affairs at ABC. "This proclamation is not only a recognition of the professionals who build our communities, but also a call to action to inspire the next generation to explore these rewarding career paths."

Construction careers offer multiple entry points and advancement opportunities - from general labor and apprenticeships to specialized trades, leadership roles, and business ownership. Wisconsin's nationally recognized apprenticeship programs allow students to earn while they learn, gaining valuable skills without the burden of significant student debt.

NWTC plays a critical role in preparing the region's future workforce through hands-on training, industry partnerships, and programs aligned with employer needs. Events like Careers in Construction Month help strengthen those connections by encouraging job fairs, student engagement opportunities, and community awareness efforts throughout October.

The college's 2023-2024 graduate survey shows that students in these programs have a 100% employment rate after graduation, with all working in their field.

"As a college deeply connected to workforce needs, NWTC is proud to partner with industry and legislative leaders to elevate awareness of construction careers," said Scott Anderson, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development at NWTC. "This is about building not just structures, but strong futures for our students and our region - and helping people see the high-demand careers that exist right here in our communities."

Careers in Construction Month serves as an opportunity for employers, educators, and community partners to come together in support of the industry - highlighting the vital contributions of construction professionals and inspiring the next generation to help build Wisconsin's future.
