UWO Jazz band backs up 90-year-old master, mentor at Grand Opera House on Nov. 22

Oshkosh's own John Harmon has spent a lifetime composing, performing, and inspiring generations of Wisconsin musicians. Now, at age 90, the celebrated pianist, composer, and mentor returns to the stage for a tribute worthy of his remarkable career.

On Friday, Nov. 22, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Jazz Ensemble will honor Harmon with an evening of music at the Grand Opera House in downtown Oshkosh. The concert will celebrate his contributions to jazz and music education while showcasing the lasting influence he's had on students and artists across the region.

Harmon will be joined by an all-star lineup of guest performers, including vocalist Janet Planet, saxophonist Tom Washatka, guitarist John Gibson, and drummer Zach Harmon-his son. Together with the UWO Jazz Ensemble, they'll fill the historic theater with energy, artistry, and deep gratitude for a musical life well lived.

"This is an incredible opportunity for our students," said Marty Robinson, UWO professor of music and Jazz Ensemble director. "To perform alongside a legend like John Harmon-and to do it on one of the most elegant and acoustically beautiful stages in the region-is a truly special experience. It's another chance for our young musicians to shine while connecting with a vital part of Wisconsin's jazz heritage."

For Harmon, the night promises to be both a celebration and a homecoming-a full-circle moment shared with the next generation of jazz musicians who carry his influence forward.

Tickets are $36, with Suite Seats available for $44. Prices include tax, facility, and ticketing fees; online purchases may incur additional costs. More details and tickets online HERE.
