While some first-year students are preparing for exams, others are already tackling real-world challenges faced by local authorities, businesses and non-governmental organisations. This is exactly how the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) approaches education.
During a visit by representatives from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), it became clear that one of the world's leading technological universities places its trust in students well before they graduate. This approach transforms not only the learning process, but also the very idea of what a university is.
"What impressed me most was that even first-year students work on real-world problems presented by local authorities, NGOs or businesses. One professor told me that even before the semester begins, he meets with representatives of these organisations to identify relevant challenges and define specific tasks for students. The students then spend the entire semester developing solutions and presenting tangible results," says Danas Černeckas, a lecturer at KTU.
According to him, the professor formalises cooperation with partners and takes responsibility for the outcomes, but the bulk of the work is entrusted to students, who develop and implement solutions. In some cases, they are even paid or receive scholarships for their contribution.
"I think this perfectly reflects a culture of trust. External partners trust MIT's researchers and lecturers, who in turn trust their students by giving them real responsibilities and the opportunity to contribute to solving practical problems while still studying," Černeckas adds.
Černeckas explains that studies at MIT are based on interactive teaching and active learning. As a result, students rarely attend traditional, theory-heavy lectures - most of the material is studied independently. Time with lecturers is dedicated to discussion, Q&A sessions, idea presentations, creative workshops and tackling complex problems.
He was equally impressed by MIT's Centre for Technological Innovation.
"There, researchers work closely with business representatives to develop ideas and carry out research, ensuring that results are applied in practice and meet market needs. I was particularly struck by how carefully mentors and advisers from industry are selected. They must not only be successful entrepreneurs or experts in their field, but also have experience working in a laboratory, so they fully understand the realities and challenges of research," he explains.
Černeckas notes that many of MIT's practices could be adapted in Lithuania, including openness to the public. Walking around the campus, it is clear there is no attempt to hide what happens in laboratories: instead of solid walls, glass partitions are often used, allowing visitors to observe students and researchers at work.
Speaking about the role of technological universities, he emphasises that technological progress should be reflected not only in laboratories, but also in everyday university operations. One example is the shift away from paper-based processes towards fully digital and more sustainable ways of working.
When assessing KTU's strengths, Černeckas highlights the development of lecturers' competencies. In his view, the platform for professional development at KTU is broadly comparable to what he observed at MIT.
"In my view, the EDU_Lab initiative is one of the best practices in Lithuania and could be adopted by other higher education institutions," he says.
He also stresses the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation skills for technology specialists.
"In today's world, entrepreneurship is no longer an added advantage but an essential skill. If we want the ideas and research we develop to have real impact, we must not only create knowledge and technologies, but also communicate their value and ensure they find their place in society and the market," he emphasises.
Although MIT stands out for its innovation, openness and culture of trust, it also faces challenges.
"One of them is that not all researchers or lecturers are willing to step outside their comfort zone and change established ways of working or teaching. However, MIT focuses not on sceptics, but on those who are ready for change. Rather than trying to force everyone to adapt, it creates the best possible conditions for those who want to move forward," he explains.
Another challenge is students' financial situation. Although the university offers various forms of support, some students still face financial difficulties and must balance studies, work and living costs. According to Černeckas, a significant share of this support comes from patronage, with a strong alumni community actively contributing to student and university initiatives.
Černeckas admits that the visit had a significant personal impact on his teaching approach and on how he engages students in the learning process.
"As a lecturer, this experience reinforced my belief that genuine student engagement and enthusiasm cannot be achieved by simply delivering knowledge. Even the simplest lecture should be interactive, encouraging discussion, critical thinking and active participation," he says.
He adds that he has already begun to incorporate some MIT-inspired practices into his teaching. One effective method has been regularly collecting feedback after each lecture. At the end of a session, students are given a QR code through which they can anonymously indicate what remains unclear. Time is then set aside at the beginning of the next lecture to address these points, helping him better understand students' needs.
Asked what advice he would give to high school students who are considering studies in technology or science, Černeckas encourages them to follow their interests and curiosity.
"I believe that the greatest personal and professional growth comes when people pursue what genuinely interests and motivates them. The best results are usually driven by curiosity and intrinsic motivation," he concludes.
