Hoover Dam welcomes visitors back tomorrow

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Hoover Dam will reopen to visitors Friday, July 31, following the successful repair of the facility's cableway system. The dam and powerplant continued operating normally throughout the temporary closure, and employees maintained access to the facility through alternate routes.

During routine maintenance, the cableway carriage moved unexpectedly, placing stress on system components and prompting crews to secure the area as a precaution. To ensure public safety, visitor access was closed Monday, July 27, while inspections continued. Maintenance teams identified and corrected the issue, and crews safely operated the cableway and returned the carriage to its home position. It is no longer suspended over the main access road.

"We appreciate everyone's patience while our teams worked to protect visitor safety and resolve this issue," said Reclamation Lower Colorado Basin Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson. "Safety is always our top priority. Securing the area allowed us to thoroughly assess the situation and complete the necessary repairs while keeping the public and our crews safe."

Lower Colorado Dams Office Area Manager Len Schilling noted that crews responded quickly. "Our crews did an excellent job troubleshooting and repairing the problem. Once the repairs were made, we were able to safely reposition the cableway carriage. We're pleased to welcome visitors back to Hoover Dam."
