  • Regional project strengthens seed systems and early warning tools in four African nations

13 March 2026

IITA -CGIAR, through the Technologies for African Agriculture Transformation (TAAT) program, is supporting the Strengthening Emergency Preparedness and Response to Food Crisis (SEPAREF) initiative implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The regional project is focusing on strengthening seed systems and improving crisis preparedness in Burundi, Comoros, Somalia and South Sudan, countries facing significant food security challenges intensified by global supply disruptions linked to the Russia-Ukraine War.

Working with national agricultural research institutions and partners, IITA through the TAAT program provides technical expertise to strengthen seed technologies and support the delivery of climate-resilient crop varieties to smallholder farmers. These efforts form part of a broader initiative to improve local seed production, enhance agricultural resilience and strengthen the capacity of countries to respond more effectively to food crises.
