Landsman, Pfluger Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Reimburse Local Law Enforcement $61M for Secret Service Support

Cincinnati, OH - Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH) and Congressman August Pfluger (R-TX) introduced bipartisan legislation to strengthen the partnership between the U.S. Secret Service and state and local law enforcement.

Reps. Landsman and Pfluger introduced the bipartisan Secret Service-Local Law Enforcement Partnership Act. The legislation would require the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - the parent agency to the U.S. Secret Service - to reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies $61 million per year for three years for services, personnel, and equipment required to support the Secret Service's mission.

In January 2026, a Southwest Ohio man allegedly used a hammer to vandalize Vice President J.D. Vance's home in East Walnut Hills. Federal and local law enforcement in Southwest Ohio partnered on the investigation.

Congressman Landsman began working on this legislation in 2024 after hearing from local law enforcement in Southwest Ohio about the resource burden associated with providing protection for Vice President J.D. Vance.

Neither the Secret Service or the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are currently required to reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies.

"Local and state law enforcement officers are often called upon to support U.S. Secret Service operations that go well beyond the scope of their normal responsibilities. The Secret Service-Local Law Enforcement Partnership Act of 2025 ensures that when these officers step up to support protective missions, they are fairly reimbursed for their time and resources. This commonsense legislation strengthens public safety, protects local taxpayer dollars, and reinforces the essential partnership between local, state, and federal law enforcement."

"Cooperation between the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and local law enforcement is a vital part of ensuring the safety and well-being of the President, the Vice President, and others who require protection details. What is often left unaddressed, however, is the cost that many law enforcement agencies incur while cooperating with the Secret Service, which can place an undue financial burden on agencies throughout the country. This legislation would create an Extraordinary Protection Reimbursement Program, which would authorize more than $61 million for law enforcement agencies that collaborate with the USSS. This money would be used towards purchasing equipment, hiring personnel, and other necessary items to ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools needed to assist the USSS."
