Know Before You Light: Goodyear Fireworks Rules and Safety Reminders

As residents prepare to celebrate with fireworks, the city of Goodyear is reminding the community about local rules designed to keep people, property and open spaces safe.

When are fireworks allowed?

Only certain consumer fireworks approved by Arizona law may be used, and only during the dates and times permitted by state law.

  • Any fireworks that shoot up in the air are illegal. This includes bottle rockets, aerial shells and roman candles.
  • Fountains, sparklers, smoke devices, wheels, and ground spinners are allowed.
  • Legal fireworks can be used from June 24-July 6 and only between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. They can be used from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. the following morning on July 4 and July 5.

Where are fireworks prohibited in Goodyear?

Even during legal use periods, fireworks are not allowed:

  • In city parks

  • On city streets and sidewalks

  • In city parking lots

  • At public schools

  • At city buildings

  • Within one mile of the Corgett Wash, Agua Fria River and Estrella Mountain Regional Park

Fireworks may only be used on private property with the property owner's permission.

Age restrictions

Arizona law prohibits the sale of consumer fireworks to anyone under 16 years old. In Goodyear, people under 16 are also prohibited from using consumer fireworks.

Public fireworks displays

Professional fireworks shows may only take place with a city-issued permit and must be conducted under strict safety requirements. Public displays are not allowed during Stage One or higher fire restrictions.

What happens if fireworks cause an emergency?

Anyone whose fireworks cause a fire, injury or other emergency may be responsible for the costs of the emergency response, including fire, police, rescue and medical services. In an emergency, call 911.

Penalties for violations

Violating Goodyear's fireworks regulations can result in civil fines of up to $1,000.

Other safety reminders

  • Never allow children to handle or light fireworks.
  • When lighting fireworks, make sure to do so on a flat solid surface away from any buildings or flammable materials.
  • Have a bucket of water or hose nearby to fully extinguish fireworks after use. Never try to re-light malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Soak fireworks in water for 24 hours, then place them in a zipped plastic bag before throwing them into the trash. Never put fireworks in the recycling bin.
