Mecklenburg County man charged with insurance fraud

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Justin Chidozie Nwachukwu, 29, of 6420 Alanbrook Road, Charlotte. Nwachukwu was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.<_o3a_p>

Special agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Nwachukwu of falsely filing an insurance claim for the theft of his 2021 Dodge Charger.<_o3a_p>

According to the arrest warrant, Nwachukwu provided false and contradictory statements to special agents and National General. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police recovered several parts from the 2021 Dodge Charger installed in another vehicle owned and operated by Nwachukwu. Agents also accuse Nwachukwu of obtaining an $80,881.87 insurance payout including paying off the lien on the car loan.<_o3a_p>

The offenses occurred between Oct. 30, 2023, and Nov. 30, 2023.<_o3a_p>

Nwachukwu was arrested on Nov. 7 and was denied bond. He is scheduled to appear in Randolph County District Court on Nov. 24.<_o3a_p>

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud.<_o3a_p>

"Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey said. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums."<_o3a_p>
