Join us for the 14th Annual David H. Caskey Memorial Lecture featuring Chris Kramer, Assistant Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Santa Barbara City College, as he explores the role of playfulness and humor in philosophy with his talk, "Thinking Seriously About Thinking Playfully."

The 14th Annual Caskey Lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. in the Physical Education Center.

The event will take place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Physical Education Center at Rock Valley College, 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL. It is free and open to the public and will include a Q&A session following the lecture.

Kramer's lecture will invite the audience to consider how humor and playfulness shape the way we think and approach life's big questions. As an accomplished philosopher, Kramer has written on topics ranging from the philosophy of education and mind to religion, oppression, and the philosophy of humor. His dissertation, "Subversive Humor," delved deeply into the ways humor can both challenge and reflect societal norms, a blend of wit and insight that promises to engage. It is a chance to explore the playful and profound sides of philosophy in a setting open to all.

"Professor Kramer has a gift for combining his quality philosophical thinking with a highly personable and down-to-earth presentation style," said Dr. Michelle Rotert, RVC Professor of Philosophy. "The audience will come away having both thought deeply and enjoyed the process."
