GENEVA (ILO News) - On 9 June 2026, the Minister of Labour and Social Policies of Italy, Ms Calderone, deposited the instrument of ratification of the Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930, with the Director-General of the ILO, Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo.

In depositing the instrument of ratification, Ms Calderone, Minister of Labour and Social Policies of Italy, stated: "In a complex international context, marked by profound transformations in the labour market and emerging vulnerabilities, Italy's ratification of the 2014 Protocol to Convention No. 29 on forced labour is a tangible confirmation of the country's commitment to promoting the fundamental principles and rights at work and to combating all forms of exploitation, coercion and abuse. Through this act, Italy completes the ratification of all ILO fundamental instruments, further reinforcing its full support for international labour standards and for the objectives of decent work and social justice."

Receiving the instrument of ratification of the Protocol, the ILO Director-General expressed his appreciation, emphasizing that "Italy has long been engaged in the fight against forced labour, having ratified the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No. 29) as early as 1934. The ratification of the Protocol of 2014 by Italy demonstrates its continued commitment to combating forced labour, upholding fundamental principles and rights at work and advancing decent work."

The Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention reinforces the international legal framework for tackling forced labour. It commits States Parties to take measures to prevent and eliminate forced labour in all its forms, including trafficking in persons, sanction the perpetrators, protect victims and ensure their access to justice and remedies.

The Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention will enter into force in Italy in one year, on 9 June 2027. For additional information, please consult NORMLEX.
