High Winds Likely on Wednesday, Dec. 17

The city of Aurora is prepared for today's (Dec. 17) wind event and all the variables it may present, including possible power outages, downed trees and other potential impacts. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning that includes Aurora, effective at 11 a.m. today.

Xcel Energy does not have any Public Safety Power Shutoffs planned for the city of Aurora at this time. However, that does not mean we are excluded from the wind event itself. Sustained wind and low humidity will still create dangerous conditions across the Front Range, including in Aurora. Residents should avoid burning and any other activities that may produce a spark.

Departments across the city are preparing for the wind event by increasing staffing and resources, including upstaffed wildland fire trucks and increased ranger presence in parks and open spaces.

The city continues to closely monitor the forecast and updates from both Xcel Energy and the National Weather Service. Residents are encouraged to do the same. Follow the National Weather Service online, on Facebook, and on X. Stay prepared by following safety tips like these from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Please remember 9-1-1 is for emergencies only. Do not call 9-1-1 to report power outages.

Power outages can be reported directly online to Xcel Energy or by calling 800.895.1999.

Flashing or dark traffic signals can be reported to Access Aurora at AuroraGov.org/ContactUs or 303.739.7000. Remember to treat any unpowered traffic signal as a four-way stop.

Downed city trees or downed large branches from city trees can be reported to Access Aurora at AuroraGov.org/ContactUs or 303.739.7000. For non-city trees, cleanup is the responsibility of the property owner. City trees can be located at our online city tree map.
