RHINELANDER, Wis. - When illness or injury strikes, knowing where to seek care can save time, reduce stress and ensure patients receive the right level of treatment. Aspirus is reminding community members in the Northwoods about the differences between walk-in care, urgent care and emergency care services, and where patients should go for each.
Patients with minor illnesses and injuries who need same-day care without an appointment should visit Aspirus Rhinelander Clinic - Chippewa Drive for walk-in services. Walk-in care is appropriate for conditions such as sore throats, ear infections, minor cuts, rashes, cold and flu symptoms, and other non-life-threatening health concerns.
For more serious conditions that require prompt medical attention but are not life-threatening, patients should seek Urgent Care at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital or Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. Urgent care providers can evaluate and treat issues such as moderate sprains, minor fractures, persistent fever, urinary tract infections and other conditions that cannot wait for a routine clinic appointment.
Patients experiencing severe or potentially life-threatening symptoms should go directly to the Emergency Departments at Aspirus Eagle River Hospital, Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital, Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff, or call 911. Emergency care is intended for conditions such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, major trauma, sudden confusion, seizures or any situation where a person's life or long-term health may be at risk.
"One of the most important things patients can do is choose the care setting that best matches their medical needs," said Bob Towne, RN, Emergency Department Manager at Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital. "When patients know where to go, they are more likely to receive timely, appropriate care and avoid unnecessary delays."
Towne noted that many common illnesses and minor injuries can be effectively treated in a walk-in clinic setting, while urgent care and emergency department teams are equipped to manage more complex conditions.
"Our emergency department is always ready to care for patients facing serious or life-threatening emergencies," Towne said. "At the same time, patients with less severe conditions can often be seen more quickly and conveniently through walk-in or urgent care services. Matching the level of care to the condition helps everyone receive the right care at the right time."
Aspirus encourages residents to consider the severity of their symptoms before deciding where to seek treatment:
