As Ohio Redistricting Hearings Begin, Republicans Are Once Again Attempting to Rig The Congressional Maps Arrow

Today, the Ohio legislature began Joint Committee hearings on redistricting. Ohio is the only state in the country that is constitutionally required to redraw its congressional map in 2025 because the 2022 map did not receive the necessary bipartisan support. Ohio's current map is already gerrymandered, and now Republicans want to further rig the map.

Ohio's current map is already gerrymandered, and now Republicans want to further rig the map.

In 2024, 55% of Ohioans voted for the Republican candidate, but 66% of Ohio's congressional districts lean heavily Republican. Under a fair map, Ohio's 15 congressional districts would consist of eight Republican and seven Democratic seats, not 10 and five, respectively.

While Ohio Republicans race to silence the voices of as many Ohioans as they can, Ohio Democrats are taking action and getting to work. Last week, House and Senate Democrats introduced their proposed congressional maps, which would ensure all Ohio voters have an equal opportunity to make their voice heard.

In response to the first Joint Committee redistricting hearing in the Ohio legislature, DNC Deputy Executive Director Libby Schneider issued the following statement:

"Ohio Republicans are poised to follow the lead of Texas and Missouri Republicans and rig their maps in a last-ditch, desperate attempt to save Trump's congressional majority. After voting for Trump's budget, under which almost half a million Ohioans will get kicked off their health insurance, Republicans are scared they'll lose - and what do they do when they know they can't win a fair fight? They cheat. In stark contrast, Ohio Democrats proposed a map that would reflect the will of Ohioans. We urge the Ohio legislature to work together and put state over party and draw a fair map. If Ohio Republicans follow the lead of Republicans in Texas and Missouri, Ohio Democrats will fight every step of the way, and the DNC will be right there with them."
