Seeing connectivity from a new perspective: Cornerstone colleagues cl…

For many of us, mobile connectivity is invisible. We make a call, stream a video or navigate a journey without giving much thought to what makes that possible, or to the infrastructure, expertise and people working behind the scenes to keep us connected.

Whilst the infrastructure may be built to go largely unnoticed, it's anything but invisible when you're standing high above the ground on one of the masts that supports the UK's mobile networks.

Recently, six colleagues got to experience that perspective first-hand, climbing a Cornerstone mast in Oxfordshire to see our infrastructure from a completely different angle. The experience offered a unique insight into the scale of the infrastructure behind everyday connectivity, as well as the expertise, precision and safety culture required to build and maintain it.

Asked to sum up the experience, colleagues described it as "unforgettable", "exhilarating" and, unsurprisingly, "high". For those who took part, it was a chance to step outside their usual roles and see first-hand the scale of the infrastructure that sits behind something most of us take for granted every day.

The opportunity was offered through an employee safety culture survey, with participants selected through a random draw. Supported by colleagues at Vodafone Three and the rigging team on site, our competition winners were guided through every stage of the climb, learning more about the equipment, processes and specialist skills involved in working at height.

While some participants admitted to feeling nervous at first, confidence quickly grew thanks to the support and professionalism of the team around them. Reaching the top provided spectacular views and a rare chance to see the UK's mobile infrastructure from a completely different perspective.

More importantly, the experience brought Cornerstone's purpose to life. As the UK's leading mobile and digital infrastructure provider, Cornerstone manages thousands of sites that help enable connectivity at the point of need, now and always. Every site, upgrade and maintenance activity plays a role in keeping people connected to the services, places and people that matter most.

The mast climb was more than an employee experience. It highlighted the skill, care and dedication behind the network and strengthened understanding between office-based and field-based teams. For those who took part, it also created a lasting appreciation for the people who make everyday connectivity possible.

When asked whether they would do it again, the answer was simple: absolutely.
