State-of-the-Art Surgical Catheterization Lab at Backus Hospital Will Enhance Cardiac Care

August 11, 2026

Backus Hospital opened a new surgical cardiac catheterization laboratory, expanding access to lifesaving, advanced cardiovascular care for patients throughout the region.

The newly redesigned space will accommodate the latest, leading-edge cardiovascular technology, increase access to minimally invasive procedures and provide the highest quality care for patients.

"This lab strengthens our ability to provide minimally invasive, state-of-the-art procedures close to home," said Donna Handley, President, Hartford HealthCare East Region. "This opening reflects Backus Hospital's ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and improving access to specialized care throughout the region. This achievement could not have been possible without the vision and culture here at Hartford HealthCare, and the expertise of our Heart & Vascular Institute."

The upgraded surgical cath lab was designed to better support multidisciplinary care teams and evolving procedural needs. The expanded footprint improves workflow, accommodates advanced imaging and interventional technologies and enhances patient comfort and safety throughout procedures.

"We're celebrating the advancement and continued investment of this institution by creating access to patients in this region in the most affordable way at the highest quality," said Jeffrey A. Flaks, President and CEO of Hartford HealthCare. "The Hartford HealthCare model is to invest locally, to build all our community organizations to the highest levels that we're capable of doing so. We're bringing world-class capabilities here, and I'm very proud of the work being done by our Heart & Vascular Institute."

The new surgical cath lab reinforces Backus Hospital's commitment to advancing clinical excellence, investing in state-of-the-art facilities, and ensuring patients have timely access to high-quality cardiovascular care.

"This is more than a new facility. It's about the lives that will be touched here. It's about the patients who receive timely care, families finding comfort and hope in the caring hands of our physicians, clinicians, nurses and techs. And now our teams have the tools they need to deliver the very best care." Handley concluded.
