Corral Sepúlveda, Chicago Federation of Labor Secretary-Treasurer Don Villar, Vice President Patricia Theresa Flynn, Commissioner Cam Davis and Commissioner Beth McElroy Kirkwood recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the MWRD.

Honoring culture, community and the stories that shape Chicago, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month by hosting a lunch gathering that featured Chicago Federation of Labor Secretary-Treasurer Don Villar. Watch the program.

Villar delivered a compelling keynote that intertwined his family's immigrant journey, a legacy of labor activism and the enduring power of cross-racial solidarity in the American labor movement. He reflected on his father's escape from political persecution in the Philippines, the racism his family confronted upon arriving in Chicago, and the acts of solidarity extended by the city's African American community that helped his family build a new life. He highlighted historic examples of Filipino workers standing shoulder to shoulder with Black, Latino, and Native American workers in landmark civil rights and labor battles, including the Pullman Porters, the Delano grape strike, and the fight against discriminatory practices in Northwestern canneries.

He also recounted his own path-from journalist to union leader and civil rights attorney-underscoring the Chicago Federation of Labor's 130-year legacy of advocating for workers of all backgrounds. Villar closed by honoring the diverse cultures and shared struggles that connect working families across Chicago and Cook County.

"AAPI Heritage Month reminds us of the strength and diversity that define our region," said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. "Don Villar's story beautifully captured the courage, resilience, and unity found within Chicago's immigrant communities. We are honored to celebrate the contributions of AAPI residents and reaffirm our commitment to uplifting every community we serve."

Chairman of Finance Marcelino Garcia also reflected on the importance of celebrating the achievements and histories of AAPI communities. He emphasized the value of creating spaces that encourage cultural understanding and elevate voices that have shaped the region's civic, economic, and social fabric.

"AAPI Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the rich cultures that strengthen our district and our communities," said Chairman Garcia. "Events like this remind us that our diversity is our greatest asset, and that by celebrating each other's lived experiences, we build a more inclusive and resilient future for everyone."

Commissioner Eira L. Corral Sepúlveda moderated a conversation with Villar, sharing his inspirational story with the audience.

"Don's journey reflects experiences shared by so many families who came to Chicago seeking opportunity, dignity, and justice," said Commissioner Corral Sepúlveda. "His message underscored how our histories intertwine and how solidarity across communities moves us forward. Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month is about honoring those stories and ensuring equity remains at the heart of our work."

Chicago Federation Labor Treasurer-Secretary Don Villar offers remarks along with MWRD Vice President Patricia Theresa Flynn, MWRD Chairman of Finance Marcelino Garcia and Commissioner Eira L. Corral Sepúlveda in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
