With just a click or two, you can help SHINE of Luzerne County at Wilkes University secure a People's Choice award - and a $5,000 prize - from the United Way of Wyoming Valley.
SHINE is an after-school program for students in first through eighth grade. But the program does so much more than help with homework. From September through May, SHINE provides a safe place for students after school, along with nutritious meals and fun, project-based learning.
In the summer, students participate in the STEM Olympiad, showcasing their science, technology, math and engineering knowledge in competitions including the rain gutter regatta and the egg drop challenge. Students also get a glimpse at their futures at College for a Day when they spend the day learning about potential majors and careers through hands-on activities in classrooms at Wilkes University.
For SHINE, the mission is a family affair. In addition to academic and social support for children, the organization assists families with access to financial literacy programs, educational opportunities, career preparation and social services.
While these services are free to program participants, SHINE needs funding to continue to support students and families in the Wyoming Valley.
And you can help. SHINE is one of five finalists in the running for a People's Choice award from the United Way of Wyoming Valley. The recognition comes with a $5,000 prize that will give SHINE the power to keep brightening lives for students and their families.
"Any amount of money will help us," says Carol Nicholas, executive director of SHINE. "It will help us to fill our budget deficit and continue to serve children and families in our area."
Round 1 is open until noon on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Click and vote to show your support for SHINE.
