Avila Beach Drive has Reopened with the Addition of a Newly Constructed Roundabout

Drivers can drive on Avila Beach Drive once again, now that the San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department has completed the construction of a planned roundabout. The intersection was reopened on September 27.

Project Manager Aaron Yonker said it was a great feeling to take part in making such a significant contribution to the community.

"I am thrilled to be a contributing member on such a worthwhile, community-supported project. In addition to reducing congestion and improving safety for all users, this project greatly improves multi-modal connectivity, including improved access to regional public transportation and existing and future planned bicycle, walking, and hiking networks," he said.

Construction of the central portion of the roundabout required a 40-day closure of the intersection at Avila Beach Drive, Shell Beach Road, and the southbound U.S. 101 off-ramps and on-ramps.

Originally scheduled for June and July, the Board of Supervisors requested that the department work with the contractor, CalPortland, to shift construction to the end of summer-the least disruptive timeframe that would allow for the project to stay on track and avoid costly delays. The August-September timeframe avoided peak summer but placed completion ahead of the rainy season.

District 3 Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg praised the collaborative effort behind the new Avila Beach Drive Roundabout, calling it a "safe, functional and beautiful interchange" that benefits drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Ortiz-Legg encouraged the public to visit Avila Beach and experience the project.

The final phase of the entire project is the new Park-and-Ride and transit stop. That work will be completed after the closure.

The $13.8 million project includes the roundabout, on and off-ramp improvements, the Park-and-Ride and transit stop, sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and a shared path so people can safely walk or bike around the roundabout.

The roundabout project is managed by SLO County Public Works with Caltrans and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) as strategic partners. For more information, visit: SLOCounty.gov/AvilaRoundabout.
