Turning Strangers into Neighbors: The Longest Table Goes Nationwide with Nextdoor Foundation's Support

Sometimes the best ideas start with a simple post on Nextdoor. That's exactly what happened in 2022 when Maryam Banikarim shared an idea that would grow into something much bigger than anyone imagined: The Longest Table.

What began as a single neighborhood potluck has evolved into a nationwide movement, and we're thrilled to announce that the Nextdoor Foundation is partnering with The Longest Table to bring the magic of shared meals to communities across the country. Through the largest single grant yet provided by the Nextdoor Foundation, this collaboration will help neighbors connect face-to-face, turning strangers into friends one meal at a time.

From Nextdoor Post to National Movement

The story of The Longest Table perfectly captures what we believe in at Nextdoor: that real connections happen when neighbors come together. The concept is beautifully simple-gather neighbors at a long table in a public space to share food and spark conversation. But the impact has been anything but simple.

Past events have drawn thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds, including a remarkable 1,000-person intergenerational potluck in Chelsea, NYC. The initiative has been featured on Good Morning America and the New York Post, but more importantly, it's creating measurable change in communities.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Research from previous Longest Table events shows the real impact of bringing neighbors together:

  • 79% reported feeling less lonely
  • 82% felt inspired to get involved locally
  • 87% connected with new people
  • 90% said they feel more positive about their neighborhood

These aren't just statistics-they represent real people finding connection and belonging in their communities.

Why This Partnership Matters

"Partnering with Nextdoor Foundation is a full circle moment," said Maryam Banikarim, Co-Founder of The Longest Table. "Little did I know after first posting about this idea on Nextdoor back in 2022, it would resonate so universally and even travel the world. Now, with Nextdoor Foundation's support we can expand our impact and enable communities everywhere to connect to those nearby."

This collaboration represents a shared commitment to combating the loneliness epidemic through grassroots action. In our increasingly digital world, there's something powerful about gathering around a table to share food and stories with the people who live nearby.

"The Longest Table is doing vital work to bridge the gap between neighbors and build a stronger sense of community for all," said Kelsey Grady, President of the Nextdoor Foundation. "We're proud to support this amazing nonprofit that helps people connect face-to-face to build stronger local community bonds."

Get Involved

The beauty of The Longest Table is that anyone can participate. Whether you're interested in hosting a potluck in your neighborhood or simply want to attend one, there are opportunities to get involved.

Neighbors, community leaders, and local organizations interested in hosting a potluck can visit longesttablecommunity.org to learn more and get started.

Because at the end of the day, the strongest communities are built one conversation, one shared meal, and one neighbor at a time.
