Update: Xcel Energy Public Safety Power Shutoff – High Wind Event

According to the National Weather Service, we still expect winds of 60-70 mph between approximately 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025.

Based on this forecast:

  • Xcel anticipates a potential de-energization of approximately four (4) hours in impacted areas.
  • Restoration is a manual process requiring crews to physically inspect lines for damage. As a result, restoration may take several additional hours and, in some cases, up to one or two days, depending on conditions.

Notifications - XCEL Taking the Lead on all Notifications

Xcel Energy has posted information to their outage website for the parameters of the outage, which is being periodically updated and pushed to this outage map.

Fire and Emergency Coordination

  • A Fire Ban will be in effect beginning tonight at 5:00 p.m. The City and County of Broomfield is working closely with North Metro Fire Rescue and regional partners.
  • Preparations began yesterday and include:
    • Topping off both Glasser Reservoir and Siena Reservoir, as well as all water tanks to ensure maximum water capacity, should Denver Water experience outages or if electrical disruptions are prolonged.
    • Fuel all City generators to maximize run time.
    • Refueling operations are prepared for an extended timeline.
    • Water Utility Department teams are staffed and prepared for system responses.

Oil and Gas Facilities

  • Staff have been in contact with Civitas. Their facilities are located in the Northern Power Area, serviced by United Power, and no shutoffs are currently planned.
  • Pads will be remotely shut in if a wildfire threat is identified
  • Staff is prepared to activate our Community Shelter - Broomfield Community Center (BCC) as an emergency shelter.
