Today the Sparks City Attorney's Office announced that its prosecutors convicted Andrew Matney of one count of Domestic Battery, stemming from an incident that occurred on April 2, 2024. This conviction during Domestic Violence Awareness Month further demonstrates the Office's commitment to holding perpetrators of domestic violence accountable and protecting victims from further harm.
On April 6, 2024, Sparks Police Department officers were dispatched to an apartment in Sparks, Nevada, to check on the welfare of a female after a family friend reported that they had received a text message indicating that she had been physically abused by her fiancé, the Defendant. Upon arrival, the Defendant answered the door and consented to a search of the apartment, where officers found the female in the bedroom with visible injuries, including severe red, purple, and yellow bruising around her right eye and a cut on the bridge her nose and additional bruising below her left eye.
During the interview with the officers, the female victim was hesitant to discuss what had occurred and appeared emotionally distressed to the point of tears. The victim disclosed that the incident had occurred four days prior, on April 2, 2024, while both she and the Defendant were intoxicated. The victim indicated that she had made unkind remarks that led to the Defendant becoming angry causing him to punch her. The officer observed that the female victim's injuries corroborated her account of the incident, including injuries consistent with the use of blunt force trauma.
Upon contact with the Defendant, the Defendant indicated that he could not recall everything that occurred during the incident due to his intoxication, but he ultimately admitted that it was a possibility that he had struck the victim. Based on the female victim's injuries corroborating her version of events and the Defendant's lack of injuries from the event, the officers booked the Defendant into the Washoe County Detention Facility without incident.
On October 15, 2025, Senior Assistant City Attorney Ana Swanson represented the City of Sparks and secured a conviction for Domestic Battery against the Defendant.
"The City of Sparks will remain focused on prosecuting domestic violence and supporting victims," said City Attorney Wes Duncan
As result of the conviction, the Defendant was sentenced as follows:
The Defendant was sentenced to 30 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended, on the conditions that he, complete 2 active days in jail or complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence classes, no contact with the victim, and that he obey all laws.
The City Attorney's Office will continue to convict perpetrators of domestic violence and support victims during the criminal process.
