"The work of journalists and communicators is essential to ensure access to information during emergencies. When an emergency occurs, the information saves lives. The role of media is vital to reducing the likelihood of a disaster, which is why it is important to understand the particular context of the media ecosystem in Tabasco, so that journalists can have the tools and conditions necessary to perform their work safely," explained Viridiana GarcĂa, Communication and Information Officer at UNESCO in Mexico.
Following the first diagnostic session, data collection is underway through an online survey that will continue to expand with input from more journalists and media professionals. The collected information will be analyzed and followed by a capacity-building phase for both journalists and authorities through workshops in 2026. In addition, protocols will be developed so that each media outlet can adapt its response according to its own conditions and capacities.
UNESCO is implementing interlinked actions-designed with the participation of institutions and communities-to strengthen resilience and reduce disaster risk in areas of Tabasco. These efforts are made possible with the support of ENI Mexico and in collaboration with various institutions, including the Civil Protection Institute of the State of Tabasco (IPCET).
UNESCO supports media and journalists as key actors in climate action and in disaster preparedness and response through a multifaceted approach that strengthens institutional strategies and editorial practices.
