Three MoDOT Projects Take Top Honors in Regional Contest…

JEFFERSON CITY - Three Missouri Department of Transportation projects were recognized this month with first place finishes in the 2025 America's Transportation Awards regional competition.

The Buck O'Neil Bridge project in Kansas City took first place in the "Quality of Life/Community Development" category. The project replaced aging infrastructure and improved traffic flow between downtown Kansas City and communities north of the Missouri River. The project also boosted regional mobility with new pedestrian and bike access, ADA-compliant improvements, and a shared-use path featuring lighting and a local history mural.

The Focus on Bridges program won in the "Operations Excellence" category. The program was launched in 2019 to repair or replace 250 bridges, most located in rural, agricultural-dependent areas. All 250 bridges were improved within four years, ensuring reliable transportation and supporting Missouri's top industry - agriculture - while strengthening the long-term resilience of rural areas.

The U.S. Route 160 Intersection project tied for first place in the "Best Use of Technology and Innovation" category. The project used innovative designs to reduce congestion and crashes at key intersections, and improved traffic flow and safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

Sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the America's Transportation Awards highlights transportation projects that deliver meaningful community benefits and demonstrate transportation's vital role for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, rail users, and transit riders alike.

MoDOT's winning projects are now eligible to compete for two national honors in the 2025 America's Transportation Awards. The Grand Prize will be chosen by an independent panel of judges, while the People's Choice Award will be decided through online public voting. AASHTO will reveal both winners at its annual meeting in November 2025.
