Bestselling Indigenous Author Angeline Boulley Brings Firekeeper’s Daughter to UW–Platteville

On Tuesday, March 24th, 2026, UW-Platteville will be hosting Indigenous, New York Times bestselling author Angeline Boulley for a reading and discussion. The event will take place in Nohr Gallery from 7:00-8:00 pm and will focus on Boulley's famous 2021 novel, Firekeeper's Daughter. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend.

Angeline Boulley is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and an acclaimed storyteller. Her novels center on her Ojibwe community and highlight important Indigenous experiences that have often been left untold in the world of contemporary literature. Boulley was raised in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie, and her father is a traditional firekeeper in their tribal community. Before becoming an author, Boulley most recently worked for the government, serving as the Director for the Office of Indian Education (OIE) at the U.S. Department of Education. Her debut novel Firekeeper's Daughter was not published until Boulley herself was in her 50's. It became an immediate #1 New York Times bestseller and will soon be adapted into a Netflix original series. Boulley has written two other novels within the canon called Warrior Girl Unearthed and Sisters in the Wind.

The story of Firekeeper's Daughter takes place in early 2000s Michigan and is centered on an 18-year-old Ojibwe girl named Daunis Fontaine. Daunis, a biracial, unenrolled tribal member struggles to fit into both her hometown and the Ojibwe reservation. After witnessing a murder, and being involved in the investigation, Daunis goes to great lengths to protect her community. This novel explores themes of generational trauma, justice, and the importance of cultural tradition.

In addition to Boulley's appearance, there will be a reading circle of Firekeeper's Daughter available to UW-Platteville students. Participants will be provided with a copy of the novel free of charge. Meetings will begin after Spring Break and continue through April. Students who are interested in this opportunity or to request accommodations please contact Dr. Amanda Tucker at [email protected].
