The San Rafael Fire Department's Wildfire Prevention crews are conducting strategic grass management on City-owned properties to reduce wildfire risk during this critical fire season.
Using string trimmers, teams are clearing tall grasses in areas adjacent to critical infrastructure, roadways, and downslope from residential properties where vegetation height and fuel continuity pose significant threats. By reducing fuel height through targeted mowing, crews are lowering potential flame heights, which provides safer conditions for first responders during wildfire events and protects our community's vital assets. This precision work focuses on locations where alternative methods like grazing or mechanical equipment are not feasible due to terrain, access limitations, or proximity to sensitive areas.
For public safety, please maintain a 200-foot distance from active work crews and reduce speed when driving near crew operations.
This vegetation management work is funded through Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority Measure C and represents a critical component of San Rafael's comprehensive approach to creating defensible space on public lands.
