Lace up your hiking shoes and discover a different side of Orange County during the 2026-2027 Green PLACE Hiking Spree, offering residents an opportunity to explore some of the County's most scenic natural lands while earning rewards along the way.

Hosted by Orange County's Environmental Protection Division, the Hiking Spree begins September 26, 2026, on National Public Lands Day and continues through Earth Day, April 22, 2027. Participants can choose from 40 trails located throughout Orange County's Green PLACE properties and record each completed hike as they work toward three achievement levels.

Hikers who complete three trails earn the Green PLACE Hiker designation and a limited-edition vinyl sticker. Complete 10 trails to become a Green PLACE Trail Leader and receive the sticker plus a choice of a Hiking Spree pin or hiking stick medallion. Those completing 15 or more trails become Green PLACE Trail Warriors, earning all three rewards, including a limited-edition Hiking Spree bandana.

But the real reward may be discovering the natural areas preserved throughout Orange County.

The Green PLACE (Park Land Acquisition for Conservation and Environmental Protection) Program acquires and manages environmentally sensitive lands to protect water resources, wildlife habitat and native ecosystems while providing opportunities for residents to experience nature close to home. These protected properties contribute to Orange County's quality of life by conserving natural resources and offering places for hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing and other passive outdoor recreation.

The Environmental Protection Division will also host free monthly guided hikes from September through April, giving participants an opportunity to explore Green PLACE properties while learning about their natural features and wildlife.

Green PLACE properties are generally open from sunrise to sunset. Visitors should stay on designated trails, properly dispose of trash, keep pets leashed and leave plants, wildlife and other natural resources undisturbed.

After completing their hikes, participants should submit their completed Hiking Form by May 1, 2027, to receive their earned rewards.

Whether your goal is three trails or all 40, the Hiking Spree offers a reason to get outside, explore Orange County and experience firsthand the natural lands being protected for generations to come.
