WASHINGTON, DC- Today, Congresswoman Sarah McBride (DE-AL) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Energy announcedit would terminate more than $7.5 billion in congressionally appropriated energy awards, including projects in Delaware:
"The Department of Energy's announcement is not just reckless - it's unlawful. Congress appropriated these funds, and no administration has the authority to unilaterally cancel them.
"Energy is energy - and at a time when families are already struggling with higher prices, we need more tools to lower costs, not fewer. These cuts threaten Delaware jobs, will raise energy costs for working families, and set us back in the fight to deliver affordable, reliable power. I will fight to ensure these congressionally approved investments are restored, because every Delawarean deserves affordable energy and the good-paying jobs that come with building it.
"This isn't about protecting taxpayers. It's about politics. These are mobster tactics - the Trump administration is illegally slashing programs during this government shutdown in an attempt to force Democrats to vote for their cuts to health care and other lifesaving services. I will not be intimidated into giving this president a blank check to dismantle the very programs families rely on."
The Department of Energy's move terminates 321 awards across 223 clean energy and grid modernization projects, including efforts in Delaware. The list of impacted projects has notbeen made public. These funds were appropriated by Congress, making the cancellations an unconstitutional overreach by the administration.
Rep. McBride pledged to continue working with colleagues in Congress to hold the Department accountable, protect Delaware jobs, and restore the critical investments that lower costs for families and strengthen America's energy future.
