European Parliament paves the way to tackling unfair trading practices in the food chain

As Europe's largest manufacturing industry and the buyer of some 70% all EU farm produce, the EU food and drink industry is glad to see that the European Parliament adopted the report by the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee to boost cross-border enforcement of unfair trading practices (UTPs) in the agri-food chain.

The adoption of the report, which took place in a plenary vote on Wednesday, 10 September, will now empower rapporteur MEP Bonaccini to initiate without unnecessary delay, negotiations on this essential legislation. This legislation will help protect Europe's farmers and food and drink makers in cases of cross-border unfair trading practices, often perpetrated by powerful European Retail Alliances.

We now call upon the Council to support the Parliament's efforts to address trans-national unfair practices harming farmers and food and drink makers.
