Medica Preventive Care Efforts Help Nearly 14,000 Medicare Advantage Members Complete Overdue Screenings 100% of Medica Medicare Advantage members enrolled in CMS 4 out of 5[...]

MINNETONKA, MN - Nearly 14,000 overdue preventive screenings completed by Medica Medicare Advantage members last year helped identify potential health concerns earlier and connect members to needed follow-up care.

Last year:

  • 6,230 members completed an overdue mammogram, resulting in 336 follow-up evaluations through biopsies or ultrasounds to assess abnormal findings.
  • 5,692 members completed an overdue colorectal cancer screening, with 2,621 members requiring follow-up care after receiving a positive or abnormal result.
  • 2,006 members living with diabetes completed an overdue eye exam, leading to the identification of 515 previously undetected cases of diabetes-related eye disease.

Every screening represents an opportunity to identify a potential health concern before it becomes more serious, connect a member with appropriate care and improve long-term health outcomes.

"Preventive care can make a meaningful difference in a person's health journey," said Lee McGrath, chief health officer at Medica. "These screenings are more than appointments on a calendar. They create opportunities to identify potential health concerns earlier, connect members to needed care and improve health outcomes. In some cases, they can even save lives. Every screening completed represents a chance to make a lasting impact on someone's health and well-being."

Those efforts come as Medica reached another important milestone: 100% of Medica Medicare Advantage members are enrolled in a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 4 out of 5 Star rated plan for calendar year 2027. This announcement applies to Medica Medicare Advantage plans and does not include Medicare Cost or Medicare Supplement plans.

Every year, Medicare evaluates Medicare Advantage plans using a 5-Star rating system. CMS Star Ratings measure plan performance across areas that include quality, preventive care and member experience. Cancer screenings and diabetic eye exams are among the preventive care measures considered in the Star Ratings program.

Through targeted outreach and engagement, Medica teams encourage members to complete recommended preventive screenings and seek appropriate follow-up care when needed.

"While Star Ratings provide an important measure of plan performance, they tell only part of the story," McGrath said. "The real value is what happens behind those ratings. When members complete recommended screenings, identify potential health concerns earlier and receive timely follow-up care, there is an opportunity for better health outcomes. Preventive care is more than a quality metric. It is a vital tool for enhancing quality of life and in some cases saving lives. That's the work our Medica employees strive for every day."
