April 28, 2026

Dr. Dorine Bennett, dean of the College of Business & Information Systems, will retire after nearly four decades of service to Dakota State University. She leaves a legacy of leadership and student success in health information management and higher education.

Bennett began her career at DSU in 1987 as an instructor following her work in healthcare in medical records and information management. Over the years, she advanced through the academic ranks to professor and took on leadership roles, including serving as director of the Health Information Management program before moving into administrative positions that led to her role as dean.

"Dr. Bennett's career reflects the kind of sustained leadership that shapes an institution over time," said DSU President José-Marie Griffiths. "Her work strengthened programs, expanded access for students, and built meaningful connections between DSU and the industries we serve."

During her tenure, Bennett helped guide the growth of DSU's academic programs. She played a key role in expanding offerings across associate, bachelor's, graduate, and certificate levels, including the development and advancement of online programs.

"Dean Bennett has played a central role in the growth and evolution of academic programs within the College of Business & Information Systems," said Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. "Her leadership helped expand opportunities, and she has also been deeply committed to student success and to preparing graduates for success."

Her involvement extended beyond campus through leadership and service in professional organizations at the state and national levels, helping maintain strong connections between DSU programs and industry practices. She also contributed to healthcare initiatives supporting the adoption of electronic health records and workforce training efforts across the region.

Reflecting on her time at DSU, Bennett has found it especially rewarding to see students grow into leaders and professionals in their fields. She hopes students carry those lessons forward.

"Be open to change, because saying 'yes' can take your life in new directions," Bennett said. "At the same time, be persistent, stand by what you believe is right, and don't give up when things get tough."

As she enters retirement, Bennett looks forward to spending more time with family and enjoying the flexibility to pursue personal interests. She also plans to remain engaged with the DSU community by attending campus events and activities.
