Felon Sent Back to Federal Prison for Illegally Possessing Gun

A man who illegally possessed a gun was sentenced on November 2, 2026, to more than five years in federal prison.

Leonard Craig Landt, Jr., age 39, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after a May 29, 2026, guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon.

Evidence during the case showed that in 2015, Landt was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to commit robbery. After his release from federal prison, in September 2025, Landt was found in possession of a Glock 19 pistol.

Landt was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. Landt was sentenced to 63 months' imprisonment. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

Landt is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
